women and men have the exact same number of ribs, that nonsense probably came from back in the middle ages, when people made ridiculous notions without bothering to check. everyone seemed to think that a horse had a different number of teeth, for instance, yet no one bothered to perform an odd ritual of opening a horse's mouth and counting the teeth.

White raven? With all due respect? This is NOT a thread about being vindictive, condescending, or judgemental.
ON topic: In the middle ages people DID look in horses' mouths. they could estimate the horse's age by the wear on the teeth. This is the origin of the phrase 'Don't look a gift horse in the mouth'. (Ie. Don't check, you probably don't want to know how old it really is.)

Roaches can survive 1 blast from the current nuclear missiles Enhanced Radiation Warheads (Neutron Bombs): A thermonuclear device designed to yield up to 80% of its energy in the form of high-energy neutrons (ordinary nuclear weapons produce most of their energy as blast and heat). Prompt or immediate radiation is enhanced by reducing the fission yield relative to the fusion yield (ie. by eliminating the U238 tamper). This fusion reaction releases up to six times as many neutrons as an equivalent pure fission or fission-fusion-fission device, and these have an energy level of some 14 billion electron volts. The blast radius increases as the cube root of the yield. A one kiloton enhanced radiation warhead can deliver an instantaneous lethal dose of 8000 rads over a radius of 690m (2260 ft) while the blast radius would be limited to approximately 550m (1800 ft). ( source) ----------- Ross and Cochran (1963) examined the effects of ionizing radiation on the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, and found that doses as low as 6,400 rads killed 93% of nymphs after 35 days, and effects on reproductive capacity could be detected at doses as low as 400 rads. Granted, German cockroaches proved capable of surviving 10 times the dosages over the same time period that would be lethal to humans, but, in point of fact, they ultimately succumbed to dosages that don’t even disturb any other insect species. ( source) ------------ If a 1 kT blast (the MK-1 Nuclear missile's yield is 15-16 kT [ source]) puts out 8000 rads and cockroaches are killed with 6400 rads, they would NOT survive a current nuclear missile strike.

Turtles can breathe through their asses. Elephants are the only animal on earth that cannot jump. Women blink nearly twice as much as men. The Main Library at Indiana University sinks over an inch every year because when it was built, engineers failed to take into account the weight of all the books that would occupy the building. The electric chair was invented by a dentist.
The longest word in the English language, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.
The only other word with the same amount of letters is its plural: pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosesl.
And finally (this ones a doozy):
The longest place-name still in use is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwe-nuakit natahu, a New Zealand hill.
HAH! beat THAT! In your faces!

HEY!! you stole one of mine!
feminists are full of it, they say men make more than women, but what they conveniently forgot to tell you is that they compare women secretaries, to men who work in dangerous factories, who get lower insurance rates and more benefits, and rightfully so, because they could die, and I don't think secretaries have the risk of death from being sliced to ribbons by a tablesaw or anything. all said was true. feminists are evil.

I am about to loose my temper. Mods, if this is out of line, by all means let me know.
White Raven: You don't know what you're talking about. While some feminists are full of it, frankly there are still many jobs where men and women do IDENTICAL work and do not receive identical pay. This is becoming drastically less common but there are still place it is true. The only feminists I have a problem with are the ones that try and swing the situation /fully/ the other way. I'm in the US military. They pay me the same as they pay the male next to me. He has only a slightly higher chance of getting shot than I do given our job fields, but, male or female, if you're getting shot at you get the same pay. Mostly the discrepancies(though not entirely) occur in the /business/ world where perception is a part of recommendations for raises etc... and therefore there is more room for who gets promoted over whom and speculation and blah, blah, blah. I'm quite sure the better business bureau has quite a bit of information on this if you'd bother to look it up, which you didn't. This I garnered from quite a few years /in/ the military and /in/ the work force and *gasp* reading the news. and *shock* paying attention to what's going around me and *horror* thinking about and making my opinions on the /facts/ as I knew them. (What a concept!) Think before you post, don't just spout random, unresearched, unsubstantiated rants.
~The Devil's Advocate, who's getting heartily tired of having to de-bunk this stuff. If you want to raise your post count, White Raven. Make sure you have something worth saying.

DA,with all due respect, there have been equal pay laws since the 1960's. It is illegal to pay males, and females, doing the same job, with the same training, different amounts, oh look, a link to a site about civil rights: www.eeoc.gov/index.html there are still jobs that don't follow these laws, but they are few and far between. Algae aren't just green, and sometimes they can color snow.

You just invalidated your own post, White Raven. I am familiar with Civil Law. There are also laws on the books that make it illegal to have a bath tub in your back yard in some places in Virginia. I reitterate. There are still fields where /perception/ is a big factor. Where 'performance' is not measured in raw numbers and can't be. That's where you get most of the discrepancies. Then you have the so-called 'glass ceiling' of promotions. Is it legal? No. Does it still happen? Yes. Is it anywhere near as common as it used to be? No. Has it become the exception rather than the rule. I don't know, I haven't been able to find a recent case study on the subject. This is the most recent I have seen. Progress is definitely being made, but as you can see from the charts, they are comparing apples to apples. People with similar credentials to people with similar credentials. www.inmotionmagazine.com/glass.htmlOther Random Facts: The Korean War is not over. The cease fire expired after 25 years and has not been renewed. (Source, My grandfather who was there for all of it.) There are 5 chinese elements. They do not include 'air' the way western mythologies do. They are Wood, Metal, Fire, Water, and Earth. (Source: A Chinese coworker.) ~The Devil's Advocate
