That particular style of Flail is more typically called a 'morning star' though the haft is usually shorter and the chain longer on the morning star. (I know I own one.) Just judging on my personal collection. I'd have to say Sword is most likely my favorite. Though I'm still trying to figure out which style I want to go with for SCA combat. (Yeah for bashing people in armor with Retan sticks.) As far as historical weapons go. The Glaive is nasty. Shield walls with spears are fun. Even a flag bearer with a Fishbat can fell a king. (If you want to know, ask. SCA stories!) Oh if you're wondering what the SCA is. www.sca.org~The Devil's Advocate

Seeing as I love training in Haidong Gumdo, I'd say the korean sword is my favorite. AKA as most people know it, the "Katana" or "Samurai sword thingy". ~Frozen

The Katana is traditionally Japanese. The Koreans had a much less uniform standard when it came to swords. Due to thier position (squashed between China and Japan in their endless struggles to conquer or topple one another) they tended to adopt a 'does it work?' style for most everything. This site meshes with what I remember from my trip to museums in Seoul. I haven't found the websites forthe museums yet. But yes. they're wonderful swords. *drools and wants one* ourworld.cs.com/kuksoolcl/koreanswordsmanship.htm~The Devil's Advocate PS If you can get a copy of Admiral Yi Sun-Sin (EE Soon-Sin), it is WELL worth the read! Modified to add link. Silly me: Still looking for the actual museum sites. I hope they still have the displayes, it's been almost 7 years!

On a mechanical level no, but as someone who's had to qualify with the bloody thing? Hitting exactly what your aiming at isn't always as strait forward. Especially at 300 yards. (*grumblegrumble<explative deleted>* popup targets*explativedeleted*)
Theoretically there isn't much to sword play, The pointy end goes into the other guy or the sharp edge slices him, or the blund thing bashes him. Practics is frequently more difficult than the basic concept implies.

though i've never thought much honor could be gained form fighting i think its more honorable in a swrod fight, its personal, a sharpshooter could take someone out form a huge distance. but i do see your point on the skill levels

my favorite type of sword is a Samurai sword. umm, at close range a Sword is just as good, if not better than a gun. at least a gun that isn't a machine gun.

Unless your built like a tank, a sheild is not a very good weapon. I have knonew a few sheild basher that could use it like a weapon, but thay are rare.

Put a frontal spike on a shield and it becomes a much more effective weapon, but it becomes more ungainly. Otherwise you make a good point ANKA.

PS: 'The Samurai Sword' is a Katana if you are speaking of the longest blade, and a Wakizashi if you are speaking of the shortest. Some sets I have seen have a third, intermediate blade, but I do not recall what it is called.
