I have one question first, do chats that use irc clients require Java, because even when I get an irc Client, I still can't get into them. anyway when I try to download Java I get an Error that says: the installer cannot proceed with the current internet connection proxy settings. please check the Installation Notes for more information. would someone please tell me what that is supposed to mean??!!

Only IRC applications that run directly from websites require Java. All other IRC clients are run using a complied language such as C/C++/VB/etc. You do not need Java to run those. use mIRC at www.mirc.comIts really rather pointless to use a Java client but if you really want to use it, whatever. If you have XP or 2000 SP3+, you should have a pretty updated version of Java already, so you shouldn't have to download it. A proxy is a server you connect to that is supposed to make websites come up faster. Some ISP's make you use a proxy, but most don't. Those "internet accelerators" are nothing but a proxy server that is set up. Anyhow, some proxy settings screw up direct internet connections, which some installers need. Basically that means remove your proxy server, or ask your ISP if you really need the proxy. I think your actual problem with IRC, however, is the proxy itself. Some proxies will not allow you to connect to IRC servers. It is best to just remove the proxy. Stony
